History of the tower
The Red Tower was built after the conquest of Alanya, by the Seljuk Sultan Alaeedin Keykubad I in the years 1221 to 1226. He served to protect the harbor district, the shipyard and the lower castle hill.
From Outside, the Red Tower is relatively easy to build, It comprises five octagonal floors at a height of 33 meters and a diameter of 29 meters.
Aleppo-born architect Ebu Ali designed the interiors in various sophisticated levels. The cistern housed in the core housing served to provide water for the forty-man garrison.
The cistern is designed as a supporting element of the entire construction.
The 5 floors of the Red Tower are designed differently. The layout and shape of the rooms differs on each floor. This should make it harder for attackers to conquer the tower.
The 4th and 5th floor have been built in the form of an open terrace.
On each floor there are narrow loopholes in the walls.
- The Ottoman traveler Evliya Celibi mentioned the Red Tower in his notes. He visited Alanya in 1671. According to his descriptions, the garrison of the tower consisted of 40 men and a commander. According to Evliya Celibi, the Red Tower is said to have protected up to 2,000 people in times of need.
- In the Restoration of the tower in the years 1951 to 1953 Reddish colored bricks were used. As a result, the fortification was known under the name “Red Tower”.
